There will also be food vendors, a kid-friendly beer garden and a sort and lifestyle expo taking place as well; check the website for further event details.

Choke is at The Needle on July 28. SUPPLIED

Choke

They only get back together for the odd gig now and again, but any opportunity to see Choke play is one that should be taken. The Edmonton-based punks are still heralded as one of the best bands to ever come out of the city, releasing six albums in a career that saw them tour the continent, influencing hordes of younger bands in the process. Opening are Street League and Counterfeit Jeans.

When: Friday, July 28 at 8 p.m.

Where: The Needle Vinyl Tavern, 10524 Jasper Ave.

Admission: Free

Info: yeglive.ca

Amelia Aspen and Doug Organ are Le Plaisir play at 9910 on Friday. FISH GRIWKOWSKY / POSTMEDIA

Le Plaisir

One of the fine things about living in perilous times is the amount of great music that often arises because of it. Such is the concept behind Le Plaisir, a band formed by former Lad Mags member Amelia Aspen and her recording engineer/synth playing husband Doug Organ, as they explore how freeing and romantic it can be to wander among the ruins of the future apocalypse. The duo will be releasing their first EP on a bill with Physical Copies and Actors over at 9910 this Friday night.

When: Friday, July 28 at 9 p.m.

Where: 9910, 9910B 109 St.

Admission: $7

Info: facebook.com

Nadine Kellman plays at Sasquatch Gathering, July 28 to 30 at Rangeton Park in Evansburg.

Sasquatch

You’ll have to hop in the car to get to the 22nd edition of Sasquatch Gathering, but if you can we highly recommend that you do this. One of the smaller fests hiding among the giants, Sasquatch promises a more intimate experience, with an eclectic musical lineup including Boogie Patrol, Punch Drunk Cabaret, Nadine Kellman and the Black Wonders, plus the astonishingly talented, fast rising singer-songwriter Jay Gilday. Children 12 and under are admitted for free when accompanied by an adult.

When: Friday, July 28 to Sunday, July 30

Where: Rangeton Park, Evansburg

Admission: $85 advance weekend passes available from Yeglive, or $100 at the gate

Info: yeglive.ca

Michael Jackson History is at the River Cree on July 29. JON VAN GRINSVEN

HIStory

It takes a certain amount of guts to think you can pull off a Michael Jackson homage, but the people behind the HIStory Show seem to have no problem declaring themselves to be the world’s premier live tribute act when it comes to Jackson brother number one. Based around the talent of MJ impersonator Dantanio, the show also features a large complement of singers, dancers and musicians intent on replicating what it was like to see the King of Pop in a live setting, complete with costume changes and lavish sets. By all accounts as close as you’ll get to seeing the original in the flesh.

When: Saturday, July 29 at 9 p.m.

Where: River Cree Resort & Casino, 300 East Lapotac Boulevard, Enoch

Admission: $31.50 to $63, available from Ticketmaster

Info: ticketmaster.ca

Ewald Cheung at Robertson-Wesley United Church on July 29. SUPPLIED

Ewald Cheung

He hangs his hat in New York now, where he’s furthering his already acclaimed skills as a musician in the program at Juilliard, but Ewald Cheung makes sure to get back to Edmonton for a visit now and again. The prize winning (Shean Strings, Golden Violin Award) violinist is doing just that this Saturday as he and pianist Henry Mokken present an afternoon  of music and desserts at Robertson-Wesley. All proceeds go towards support and upkeep for the church.

When: Saturday, July 29 at 2 p.m.

Where: Robertson-Wesley United Church, 10209 123 St.

Admission: $15, available in advance from the church or at the door

Info: 780-482-1587

The Gold Rush at the Metro Cinema on July 29.

The Gold Rush

He rarely gets named in any of his films, but you’ll always recognize Charlie Chaplin as the Little Tramp. In his 1925 classic silent film he’s a prospector looking to get rich in the Klondike Gold Rush, but ends up becoming mixed up with wanted criminal Black Larsen and fellow gold hunter Big Jim. Misadventures, misunderstanding, comedy, and romance (with dance hall girl Georgia) ensue in this cinema classic, which many hail as Chaplin’s best.

When: Saturday, July 29 at 2 p.m.

Where: Metro Cinema, 8712 109 St.

Admission: $10, adults; $6, students and senior citizens. Children 12 years of age and under are admitted for free

Info: metrocinema.org

Bruno Mars hits Rogers Place on July 30.

Bruno Mars

Just three albums into a career that has earned him multiple Grammy Awards and chart topping singles and it seems that Bruno Mars isn’t going to be slowing down any time soon. The Honolulu born singer-songwriter has earned a certain amount of enmity from some of his peers for that success, though most have eventually relented and spoken with admiration of his talent, such as Kanye West, who apologized last year and asked for a collaboration. Mars is in town with his latest album, 2016’s 24K Magic, as well as his ridiculously popular single, That’s What I Like. Opening is Camila Cabello.

When: Sunday, July 30 at 8 p.m.

Where: Rogers Place

Admission: $40 to $175, available from Ticketmaster

Info: ticketmaster.ca
